Khao San Road and the surrounding Rattanakosin old town are where Bangkok actually began — the royal island bounded by the Chao Phraya and a ring of canals, home to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun (across the river), the National Museum, and the backpacker strip that made Bangkok famous. It’s cheaper than Sukhumvit, more atmospheric, and further from the BTS.

This is where a scooter actually pays for itself. The old town has no BTS and only one distant MRT station, so taxis and tuk-tuks are the default — and both are slow, scam-prone, or expensive. A scooter lets you ride between Wat Pho, Wat Arun (via Memorial Bridge), the Golden Mount, Chinatown, and Dusit Palace in a single morning, then park at your guesthouse for 20 baht.

**Caveats:** the old town streets are narrow, chaotic, and full of tourists on foot. Go slow, respect the temples (no riding through temple grounds), and watch for tuk-tuks making surprise U-turns.
